Just after her first birthday we noticed a dramatic change in her behavior and development and then shortly thereafter we received the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I cant describe how lucky I feel that we got the diagnosis as early as we did and started PT, ST, and OT as soon as possible. It is absolutely amazing what is possible. (We also started using PEXs at the same time and by the time she was in Kindergarten she could read at a third grade level.)

Good luck to you in all your endeavors, there is certainly no shortage in need and no limit in what is possible. I do wonder about the tolerance of cultural differences. It really amazed me how many people in our generation and our parents' lack cultural tolerance. I think this really came out in the whole NYC "Mosque" debacle. But, I have now digressed into political opining which probably isn't appropriate on the blog about play. :)
The empathy piece completely scared me, though. Yes, kids have always been mean. But I guess I like to think that when the mean kids grew up out of the popularity contest of high school that they realized their actions actually hurt people. (I know that this isn't true for everyone, and I also realize that I have a very sunny, idealistic perspective on a lot of things.) But, there's no denying that social networking and texting takes the emotionality out of relationships. It makes it very easy to be mean because you never have to see the reaction of the other person - which makes me think that kids who have capacity for empathy may actually take to bullying since they never have to see the result in someone's eyes.
Btw, my mind is spinning on who the meanest girl in our high school was... I wonder if I'm "friends" with her.Erikahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06101906221932474536noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5430031684833897298.post-3604288614976757152010-11-17T20:39:10.713-06:002010-11-17T20:39:10.713-06:00Interesting article, but I'm not sure I quite ...Interesting article, but I'm not sure I quite understand where the author was going with it. On one hand, if being "mean" itself is cool, well maybe that's an issue, but wasn't being mean always sort of cool? Bullies have always been more feared than ostracized. the meanest girl in my high school now has 733 friend on facebook (my biggest act of rebellion is not being one of them). most of whom still probably live in fear of her.

And then there's this comment - "When you get kids actually in classes talking about race," he added, "what you find is that they themselves aren't talking about it. You're having the first conversation about it with them. We end up having to do a lot of unpacking." Which sort of confused me. I don't really understand what "unpacking" he's referring to. Is the author implying that under the surface of tolerance there's a problem or is he saying that nobody talks about race because nobody cares about race? Because not caring about race really isn't the same as being tolerant, it just means that the whole issue never crossed your mind. Which isn't that crazy when you think about it - for our grandparents, wasn't there a HUGE difference between someone who was irish and someone who was italian? And when we were growing up, didn't such prejudices seem inane? So maybe for our kids, race issues seem inane. Though I have heard (which the article doesn't address) that while kids today don't really care about race they DO care about socio-economic distinctions. Basically, it doesn't matter what color you are, but if your bag is a fake, then high school is not going to be fun for you.Darcyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06751860223320893192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5430031684833897298.post-45760604682745620052010-11-09T11:42:39.820-06:002010-11-09T11:42:39.820-06:00We love goop (though we call it goo), it's bec...We love goop (though we call it goo), it's become our go to activity for rainy days. "I...Sara M. emailed me the following comment:

"I love your new blog with parenting ideas and tips. After Claire's nap yesterday, I tried out the Pet Vet idea and had lots of fun with her. I grabbed some cotton balls, bandaids, a flashlight, a flossing wand (pretty much anything...lol), a head thermometer, and drew out a quick diagram of the cats with some crayons for Claire. I even put a line at the bottom for Dr. Claire's signature at the end of her exams. She now chases Fiona and tries to examine her while saying 'Good Girl, Fiona!!!!'

She had so much fun just touching the cats. Maya is actually very sick (she has under a year to live due to a congenital disease and is in renal failure) so we have her contained in the basement most of the time. You should have heard Maya purring throughout her 'Claire' exam. She was so happy and Claire had so much fun looking into her mouth, putting bandaids over her eye, counting the rings on her tail, feeling her wet nose, and pretty much torturing Maya. Maya loved every second. Fiona failed miserably and was more like examining a wild badger. But we still had lots of fun.

It inspired me to try more activities with Claire afterwards. I filled up 6 glasses with water and gave her a big spoon. Then I dropped some food coloring in them. One red, one yellow, one blue. Then I let her pour each one into another cup to make the orange, green and purple. At the end, she poured them all into one which made muddy green and muddy purple but she knew the colors when she made them. And she wanted 'more' when we were done.

I have so much fun with her at this age and love reading your blog for inspiration on what I can do with her staying at home. I run out of ideas sometimes. Most activities last at the most 15 minutes and then she's onto something else. :)

Keep them coming!"Erikahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06101906221932474536noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5430031684833897298.post-23287713708474820952010-10-31T20:54:56.127-05:002010-10-31T20:54:56.127-05:00These look wonderful!
